Oh No He Didnnn't

Description

Wan Shi Tong was, as always, beak-deep in scores of books and scrolls, maintaining them and reading over the material.
Again.
It gave him satisfaction, knowing that he and his family of foxes (and a lovely woman) were the only ones who could keep and manage so much knowledge at once.
His whole existence's work, abused as it had been by the world, remained his greatest accomplishment, and was forever expanding.
Yesterday, Nyra left and told Wan she would be back in a day or so.
It was mid-morning, and light was pouring in.
As Wan tidied up, the familiar screech of his beloved echoed far behind him.
He turned and looked up, at first seeing nothing, but finally the white owl swooped into the light.
Wan smiled as she glided toward him, light casting her silhouette on him.
She landed on the floor in front of him, returning his smile.

        "Hey, I'm back!"

"So I see,"
he replied calmly.
"You're back a little sooner than I expected, considering your timing skills.

Nyra raised a brow, smirking.

"Oh shut up, I could do so much worse."

"Hmhm!
Meanwhile, I took the liberty of laying a few orchids at your window perch, just as a surprise."

        "Aww!
Where did you get orchids?"

"I've been growing some in the back sections for a while now.
Didn't I tell you this?"

Nyra stared at him with big, blank eyes before replying calmly, if not a little lost.

        "...No."

"Oh..."

An awkward silent few moments of staring and blinking passed until Wan smiled and spoke again.

"Well, now you know.
So, where have you been?"

        "Weeell--"

"Oh God."

        "What?"

"Whenever you drag out the word "well" at the start of your sentence, it tends to indicate that you've done something...bad."

Nyra frowned slightly.

"All right, well how about; 'Sooo...' "

"That sounds much worse."

        "WAN."

She was loud, but she giggled afterwards.
The tiny smirk tugging the corner of Wan's mouth told her he was just on one today, and she knew not to take anything to heart.
Besides, she was very talented at getting into trouble.

"Go on, finish."

After waiting and making sure he was content, Nyra continued.

"Anyway, I went back to one of the old hangouts I used to visit before we met.
Yes, before you ask, one of the wild 'party zones.' "

Nyra raised her right wing, cutting Wan off just as he had opened his beak to say something.

        "NO.
Listen."

Wan closed his beak, looking concerned and a little annoyed.

"I just went back to see some close old friends of mine.
FEMALE friends, before you panic; I really didn't
have good guy friends."

Wan nodded, absorbing this.

"Okay...
I'm not upset, just nervous."

Nyra grinned.

"I have that affect on people," she cooed seductively as Wan's feathers ruffled.

Once again, she giggled.

"So anyways, I went and found some of my best friends and...brought them back to meet you."

"Oh?"

        "Yes!"

The male stood a little taller and drew in a breath, studying Nyra's happy face.
It was clear she was eager for this, and considering the good she'd brought to his life, he figured meeting some of her friends couldn't be so bad.

"All right, I would like to meet them, then."

He smiled, but it was more than out-shined by the beaming happy expression his partner had.

        "Great!"

She looked up toward a shelf a little ways behind her and called out.

        "It's all good, ladies!"

No one emerged, but rather, the owls' ears were met by a lovely soprano humming, and soon four more, differently leveled voices joined.
The mysterious quintet hummed their harmonious tune together from their hideaway, the sounds like bells to the others' ears.
Even the passing foxes stopped to swoon at the hypnotic sound.

"Oh my...
Singers, I take it?"

Nyra nodded happily.

        "That's right.
Very popular for it, too."

Wan looked up, his eyes gleaming with curiosity and wonder.
When the singing closed out there was a pause, and finally the group showed themselves.
What had at first been a look of happiness on Wan's face quickly dissolved into confusion and worry, if not a bit of irritation, yet again.
The quintet consisted of crows, and only crows.
Five females, all forming a murder, which the old spirit was not happy to see.
Nyra remained oblivious as the black birds soared down to the ground where the owls were, landing with a little bounce, one by one and all smiling.
Though it was apparent they were genuinely happy, there was an unmistakable look of mischief present on each and every face.

"Waaan, these are my girlfriends," Nyra said happily, waving a wing at them.

Wan's eyes quickly ran over each crow's face before he stood tall again.
He wore his disdain very plainly, even if his next remark was witty.

"Define 'girlfriends.' "

Nyra shot him a look with another raised brow.
Given her history, she understood what he meant, and while it was funny, he was still an ass.

        "Oh hah hah."

The crows giggled and chuckled, also aware of Nyra's reputation, and very amused by her mate.
Wan, however, remained firm and serious.
He sighed to himself, sounding discouraged.

"You brought crows to my library?"

The girls suddenly began to look a little unhappy themselves, all stepping up behind Nyra.
Nyra blinked irritably at her "oh-so-wise" hubby, getting ready to be mad at him, until her own mischievous side decided to wake up.
She looked innocent, pulling back with wide eyes.

"Oh, Wan, you're not...racist, are you...?"

She finished it with a grin as the crows each craned their necks to the side from behind their friend, scowling at him.
Wan jumped a little, feathers standing as he quickly looked them all over.

"I beg your pardon?!"

        "You heard me."

The crows stepped out from behind Nyra, looking cross and waiting for an answer.

"Eugh, you know better than that."

        "So, what's wrong with crows?"

"Well no offense, ladies, but crows are notoriously thievish and rather brutal.
I can't help but be skeptical."

Nyra snorted.

        "So?
Owls are notorious for being wise, but look at you!"

"...Excuse me???"

The crows grinned, chuckling darkly.
Nyra had thrown stipulation right back in his face.
Wan just growled.
Eventually, Nyra went up to him and spoke softly again.

        "Just give them a chance.
They came all this way just to meet you, shouldn't they get a warm welcome?"

Wan paused to think, then tilted his head a little.

"Why would they come to see me?"

"Because they care about me, and when I told them I was settled and happy, they wanted to meet the man who changed my life."

Needless to say, Wan was taken aback by this, and was quickly humbled.
His face, as well as his voice, softened.

"Oh..."

Nyra smiled warmly.

        "So...?"

With a studious gaze at the white owl, Wan sighed softly and nodded.

"Sure."

Nyra nipped gently at his cheek feathers affectionately, then walked back over to the crows.

"Wan, meet the zi jing sisters."

"Zi jing?
Interesting."

        "Mhm.
This is Ying, Xia, Jingfei, Yanmei, and Meifing."

"It's very nice to meet you,"
Wan remarked with a welcoming nod.

"I am Wan Shi Tong, and welcome to the spirit library."

    "Wow, neat!"
the third one chirped excitedly.

Nyra spoke to Wan quietly.

"They won't be here long, just a few hours.
I even made them promise not to steal anything."

"Eh -- what??"

"Come on, bitches, let's look around!"

They all laughed, squealed and cawed, flying off to go explore the massive gallery of knowledge with their rambunctious friend.
Wan would be very stressed out for the remainder of the day.

I LIIIIIIIIIIIIVE! Mushu I LIVEE

Ok so first off, i had an awesome weekend with my little sister and i miss her already!
Everything that could've gone right went right, which was all i hoped for.
But now i'm back in business!
Albeit a little slowly, but i'm here!

Now then, before anyone gets their noots tangled up in their tight ass child panties, allow me to elaborate more on the whole "racist" thing.
No, it's not because they're black.
So what the racism thing in the passage is about, in case you didn't catch it, is the fact that NO ONE likes crows (except a few people, myself included).
There is no animal that likes the crow.
Crows kill everything, eat everything, and steal things.
They're ruthless and scary and mean.
Just because they happen to be black, does not mean that that is the joke.
Also we're all humans, which is one race.
Crows are separate from other races of animal, so the term "racist" is kind of wonky anyway imo in regards to people.

So please, relax!

That aside, it felt SO good to write for Wan and Nyra and show their witty banter!
I love these two so hard, it's a shame i couldn't get him in the picture too but i really wanted to focus on the ladies ;)
Speaking of which, i am soon about to elaborate on the zi jing sisters, so be prepared for that! :D

Enjoy!
